Chevy Volt Named the Most Important American Car of the Last Quarter Century

Two and a half decades. One and one-fourth score. Car rental age. Whatever you call it, 25 years is a size-able portion of time. A lot can change over such a temporal gap as car models come and go.

In honor of the Fourth of July 2012, The Car Connection released its list of the Most Important American Cars of the Past 25 Years. This collection of influential autos was topped by a relative newcomer: the Chevy Volt.

Perhaps the most powerful concept that the Volt demonstrates is the idea of an extended-range electric car. Drivers in the United States want a fuel-efficient vehicle, but they also don’t want to sacrifice traveling great distances or get stranded during an unexpected errand.

To give Americans the freedom to which we are accustomed, the 2012 Chevy Volt is equipped with both a 149 horsepower (11 kilowatt) electric motor and a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. The combination of the two results in a total range of 375 miles on a single tank of fuel.
